Dr. Atul Mohan Kochhar obtained his MBBS and MD (Dermatology) from the prestigious Delhi University. He was awarded the University Gold medal for excellence in the field of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology. He is also a Diplomate of National Board (DNB- Dermatology and Venereology), a Member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences and a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.
He worked since 2003, as a Professor & Consultant in the Department of Dermatology & STD, Lok Nayak Hospital and Maulana Azad Medical College and, New Delhi.
Over the years he has held various Organizational positions viz. the President, Secretary, Vice President, and Executive member of the IADVL –Delhi State branch and has successfully organized as Organizing Secretary various conferences of IADVL – at State and National Level. He is the recipient of various state and national awards including the prestigious Sardari Lal Memorial Award for the year 2015. He is the current President – Society for Pediatric Dermatology and Founder Secretary -Scientific Cosmetological Society. He has More than 70 publications, 4 books and many chapters and multimedia to his credit.
An active practicing clinician, with a passion for quality in healthcare, a Principal Assessor with NABH since 2016, he has since December 2019, taken over as the Chief Executive Officer of the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare providers of India. Quality, promotion of patient safety and taking Best healthcare practices to the ‘poorest of the poor ’ are his mission in life.
National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH), a constituent board of the Quality Council of India, established in 2005, is in its 19th year of creating an ecosystem of quality in healthcare in India and has built itself as a national accreditation body over the years. NABH is structured to cater to the needs of the consumers and sets standards and benchmark for the progress of the Indian Healthcare Industry. NABH stands for its values: credibility, responsiveness, transparency and innovation in healthcare industry of the country and hence NABH accreditation is used as an empaneling criteria by various government organizations. NABH has given the country national standards or ‘Desh ka Standard’ and are in line with the vision of ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’. These standards help to build a culture of quality and patient safety at all level and across all the function of healthcare organizations in the changing healthcare environment.
All NABH standards have been developed in consultation with various stakeholders in the healthcare industry and if implemented help the healthcare organizations in stepwise progression to mature quality systems covering the entire spectrum of patient safety and healthcare delivery. NABH provides accreditation to hospitals in a non discriminatory manner regardless of their ownership, legal status, size and degree of independence. NABH, as an organization and NABH standards for hospitals are internationally recognized and benchmarked. The accreditation of NABH standard for hospitals authenticates that NABH standards are in consonance with the global benchmarks set by ISQua and thus hospitals accredited by NABH will have international recognition. The NABH organization & the hospital accreditation standards are internationally recognized and benchmarked. NABH is an Institutional as well as a Board member of the International Society for Quality in Health Care (lSQua) and Asian Society for Quality in Health Care (ASQua) and a member of the Accreditation Council of International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua).
Currently, NABH is offering more than 20 accreditation, certification and empanelment programs for various types and maturity level of healthcare providers. NABH is the only accreditation body that has an accreditation system for Traditional Medicine worldwide. It has independent standards for Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy.
The standards are designed to facilitate ease of understanding and implementation. The healthcare industry has endorsed and adopted NABH in a big way. Overall, the dream of a self-reliant Quality health system is only possible when high quality, affordable and accessible health services are being provided to all equitably and NABH is committed to this vision. There is a growing recognition of the importance of accreditation, as a useful tool for patient safety and more healthcare facilities are expected to seek accreditation in the coming years as patient expectations continue to rise and the healthcare system in India evolves.
